Yes. With central air, the AC coil sits on top of the furnace and uses the furnace blower and ducts. That's why a furnace and AC are often planned together.
Once a year is the usual recommendation, ideally before the heating season. A check-up catches small problems early and keeps the system running safely.
Check it every month or two and replace it when it looks grey or dusty. A clogged filter makes the blower work harder and cuts airflow to your rooms.
