// How it works

What's really going on in there.

We make it easy. Two real systems, drawn the way they're actually piped. Orange is hot supply, blue is cooler return.

// Hydronic boiler system

A boiler room, explained.

The setup in TJL's photos: a wall-hung IBC condensing boiler, pumps, an expansion tank, PEX manifolds and an indirect hot water tank.

IBCMOD-CON PVC INTAKE + EXHAUST CONDENSATE DRAIN DHW 1 23CLOSE TEES4AIR SEP5 7 EXP. TANK 6 ZONE PUMPS6 INDIRECTPANEL RAD IN-FLOOR LOOPS8 ◄ RETURN HEADER9
Rads supply50–70°Ctypically, on cold days
In-floor water30–45°Ctypically, after mixing
Return to boilerunder ~55°Ctypically, so it condenses and runs efficiently
  1. Boiler heats the water. The wall-hung IBC condensing boiler burns gas and heats the water. Its own pump sends it out.
  2. Boiler pump pushes hot water to the main pipes.
  3. Closely spaced tees join the boiler to the house pipes, so each pump can run on its own without fighting the others.
  4. Air separator sits on the hot supply, where it pulls out air bubbles best.
  5. Expansion tank soaks up the water as it expands when heated. It sits just before the pumps so pressure stays steady.
  6. Zone pumps push water out to each zone. Hot water usually goes first (priority), so showers stay hot.
  7. Mixing valve blends in cooler return water, because floors need much cooler water than rads. The pump sits right after it.
  8. Manifold and floor loops: one PEX loop per area, warming the floor.
  9. Return: cooler water collects in the return pipe and goes back to the boiler to heat up again.

Ground, below frost8–10°Ctypically, all year
Loop into heat pump20–30°Ctypically, in summer
Air out of ducts12–15°Ctypically, cooling
  1. Ground loop: buried plastic pipe (horizontal trenches or vertical boreholes) filled with water and antifreeze.
  2. Flow centre: pumps the loop fluid between the ground and the heat pump.
  3. Loop heat exchanger: in heating, cold refrigerant boils here and picks up heat from the loop fluid. In cooling, heat is dumped here into the loop.
  4. Compressor: squeezes the refrigerant vapour, which makes it much hotter.
  5. Reversing valve: sends the hot gas to the air coil (heating) or to the loop (cooling).
  6. Air coil and ducts: the blower moves air over the coil and through the ducts. Water-to-water units heat radiant floors instead.
  7. Expansion valve: drops the pressure so the refrigerant gets cold again and the cycle repeats.
  8. Desuperheater (optional): borrows some hot-gas heat to pre-heat your hot water tank.

// FAQ

Good questions.

Do you work on homes or businesses?
Both. TJL handles heating, cooling and refrigeration for homes and commercial jobs.
What does geothermal actually do?
A geothermal heat pump moves heat between your home and the ground through a buried loop of pipe. In winter it pulls heat in; in summer it moves heat out. One system handles both heating and cooling.
How does radiant in-floor heat work?
A boiler warms water, which is pumped through a manifold into loops of tubing under the floor. The floor itself gently warms the room.
Ductless or air-source: which one do I need?
It depends on your home. Ductless units suit homes or rooms without ductwork; ducted air-source heat pumps use the ducts you already have. We'll walk you through the options on a site visit.
Can you help me figure out rebates?
Ask us on your quote. We'll point you to programs you may qualify for.
